What the city publishes, and what it does not
This page is shorter than our Toledo and Perrysburg pages for an honest reason. Sylvania publishes less.
Confirmed: a zoning permit is required, and the form to use is the general Zoning Permit with Other selected.
Front yard height: the city’s codified ordinance on fences and hedges limits them to three and a half feet in the required front yard of a residential property. We could only read that figure through a search extract, because the online code library blocks automated access, so treat it as strong but worth confirming.
Side and rear yard height: not confirmed. We could not read the full ordinance and we are not going to publish a number we have not seen. Six feet is the usual maximum across Ohio suburbs, and it is what Toledo and Oregon both allow next door, but usual is not the same as verified.
Fee: not published. There is no fence permit fee on the city’s zoning permits page. Across Ohio, fence permit fees run from $25 to upwards of $300, which is too wide a range to be useful for planning. Call and ask.
Finished side rule: not confirmed. Toledo requires the finished side to face out. We found no such published rule for Sylvania. If it matters to you or your neighbor, settle it before the posts go in.
What to ask when you call
Have these five questions ready, and write the answers down:
- What is the fee, and how do I pay it
- What is the maximum fence height in the side yard and the rear yard
- How close to the property line may the fence sit
- Do you need a site plan or survey, and how many copies
- Is an inspection carried out after the fence is built
Ask the same questions of your installer. A company that works in Sylvania every month will already know the answers, and comparing the two is a good test of who you are dealing with.
Pools
The city’s code requires public swimming pools to be enclosed by fencing of not less than 6 feet. That is written for public pools. If you are fencing a private pool, ask the city directly what applies, because pool fencing rules are separate from ordinary fence rules in every local city we checked.

Ohio law requires notice to the Ohio Utility Protection Service at least two working days before digging, on 811 or 1-800-362-2764. What a fence costs in Sylvania
Sylvania sits in Lucas County, where the combined sales tax is 7.75 percent. That is the contractor’s cost on materials and not a line on your bill, because in Ohio the contractor pays the tax and quotes you a lump sum.
Toledo contractors who serve Sylvania publish $25 to $35 a foot installed for wood privacy fence and $45 to $75 a foot for vinyl. Taking an old fence out adds $5 to $10 a foot.
